ABOUT

MY

JOURNEY

JESSICA SOMMERVILLE

Hi everyone! For those of you who do not know me, my name is Jessica Sommerville. I am 22 years old and from Ontario, Canada. This blog will follow my adventure as I travel to Townsville, Australia to take part in a 22-week Medical focused Discipleship Training School (DTS) with YWAM Townsville.

Unfamiliar with YWAM?  Youth With A Mission is a global movement of Christians from many cultures, age groups, and Christian traditions, dedicated to serving Jesus throughout the world and we unite in a common purpose to know God and to make Him known.

What will I be doing?  The first part of my DTS will include 12 weeks of lectures with guest speakers from all around the world. A different topic is covered every week, giving me the opportunity to dive in deep with God. Topics will focus on hearing God’s voice, identity, medical missions, relationships, Bible study, nature and character of God and more.

The second part includes a 10-week practical outreach partnering with YWAM Townsville’s long-term Medical Ship serving in Papua New Guinea; I will have the opportunity to be a part of teams connecting with local villages, providing needed healthcare and assisting in rural community development. This is where I will have the chance to bring hope and life to those who are in great need.

Why YWAM?  In 2006, my family moved to Chico, California where my parents attended a Discipleship Training School with YWAM Chico and continued as staff for the next 3 years.  I enjoyed traveling to different countries and experiencing different cultures, but the best part were the various medical ministries we partnered with and it was then that I developed a real heart for healthcare. So, after completing my second year of nursing I find it has reignited the passion for medical ministry and desire to search deeper into my calling in life, which is why I feel led to attend a DTS with YWAM.

This really is so much more than just a course for me – my prayer is that I will gain such passion and boldness in my faith, while developing life-long friendships that will carry through the rest of my life. All while passionately serving the people of Papua New Guinea with a medical focused ministry.

Thank you for taking the time to read my blog!
